I've been leading tours of tourists in Kyoto recently, and recounting the tale of why humans have a short but beautiful lifespan (because Ninigi, who I think could be plausibly seen as a sort of Japanese Adam figure, chose to wed Konohanasakuyahime-no-Mikoto but not her homely immortal sister, Iwanagahime-no-Mikoto, a rock goddess).
