I did mean the first one. For me, sitting with the deity in question and just making an effort to talk honestly is the best policy for making a true connection; doing things the other way around starts things on a transactional foot, which is not invalid necessarily but certainly does not suit my own personality and the kind of relationship I'd like to foster with the divine. That said, I can see that there may be other points of view on the matter, and they are not necessarily wrong.
Ultimately either way is fine; if you're really doing something important wrong, but you're making an effort to listen, then you'll find yourself figuring out a better way rather quickly. Whatever else, just make your own best good faith effort, and respect that you are working with a divine entity here who is immeasurably more powerful and experienced than you can imagine. It may well be that you are initiating contact in order to petition for a specific outcome; but it is vital to understand that deities are not magical vending machines. Rather, by engaging, you are opening yourself up to let those forces into your life, and be changed by them. Respect the divine and respect this process, and I suspect you will be amazed by the results.
When you open your prayer, if you happen to have any offerings with Jovian energies/associations already at hand, you might include that as well. (If not, please don't let it stop the process by making you feel like you need to go to the store first or something.) Some normal substances corresponding to Jupiter are almonds, cedar, clary sage, dandelions, lemon balm, and olives.
You might dress in blue or otherwise decorate the area you will pray at in blue. In my personal planetary practice, I also often put up an appropriate Tarot card traditionally associated with the planet in question. It seems to me in your case that Temperance, 6 of wands, and 9 of cups are all suitable for your purposes, and if this appeals to you, you might choose whichever of those attracts the most when you look at their image. (By the way, I used the 6 of wands when I prayed on your behalf earlier today-- Thursday already passed in my part of the world.)

I did my first one last night; I didn't have any of these at hand, but I wore blue, with a blue candle, and put on my jupiter stone ring.
