Apologies if you are well aware of this and have made your own choices in the matter, but I feel the need to point out that JMG often tells people who ask him about it that mental illness and ritual magic do not mix well at all. I don't recall where his dividing lines are-- for instance, if he considers the SOP to be safe for minor chronic depressives, but a Middle Pillar is a bad idea, or whatnot-- so if you think there is any chance at all of what you termed "serious mental illness" recurring at any future point, I strongly recommend consulting JMG directly in the current Open Post or in next week's Magic Monday.
In the meantime, natural magic and prayer are quite robust if applied with care and enthusiasm, and putting this request in to the prayer list is one good step in that regard.
